National primary roads are the most important roads in the Republic of Ireland. Together with national secondary roads, they are the responsibility of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, a state agency. Many national primary roads include sections that have been declared to be motorways. They bear numbers in the range 1 to 50, prefixed by the letter M in the case of sections under motorway regulations, otherwise by the letter N. The N50 is almost entirely a motorway and is in consequence signed exclusively as the M50, references to it as the N50 appearing only in legislation.
