N32 was the classification given until February 2012 to the route – also known as the Northern Cross Extension – connecting the M1 at Turnapin in Fingal to Darnadale in Dublin City. It opened on 6 December 1996.
With the downgrading of all major routes in Dublin, this one became the R139. This change also affected the N32's motorway cousin, the M32.
Despite the road having been downgraded 12 years ago, as of 2022 electronic VMS signage on the motorway network still refers to the road as "N32". It is one of several areas where TII seem reluctant to accept Dublin City Council's road numbering changes.
Some maps from the planning of the Northern Cross Route showed the M50 extending all the way to Malahide Road, though this was most likely an error.
