Bankfield Roundabout is the southernmost roundabout on the A77 Ayr bypass, the last junction being a simple fork. This presumably reflects the diminishing traffic volumes further south, although the seemingly constant flow of HGVs heading south for the Irish ferries would perhaps contradict this idea. The roundabout is a curious rectangular shape, with the 4 arms leading off from the corners. This is apparently to accommodate the skewed crossing of the old A713. The former line of the A713 is still identifiable in the centre of the island, with a double row of trees, although the gap between them is perhaps too narrow for the old carriageway.
The A77, then, crosses from north east to south west, whilst the A713 passes north west to south east. All four approaches have two lanes, although none are more than a few cars long. Despite all of the above, the roundabout can still get busy as it is the main route to Ayr's Hospitals, which lie a short distance south on the A713, and in the summer months tourist traffic is guided down the A713 on the Galloway Tourist Route.
