Hopwood Park Interchange (also known as Alvechurch Interchange) forms junction 2 of the M42, linking it with the A441, to the south of Birmingham. Hopwood Park services are located at the junction. The junction forms a major access point for the town of Redditch despite not being signed as such from the mainline of the M42, traffic is now sent the long way round via junction 3 and the A435.

History

The junction was first conceived in the early 1970s when plans for the M42 were drawn up. Early designs were basically the same as what was built with the key difference being an extra arm on the southeast corner of the roundabout leading to Radford Road. The A441 spur to the north is shown as a dual carriageway on early plans.

The junction first opened in 1986 as one of the final major phases of the M42 construction. At this time there was only a single route running from the roundabout, this was a spur of the A441 to the north which was built to single carriageway standards rather than dual carriageway as originally planned. In the 1990s the Alvechurch bypass was constructed, a dual carriageway link running from the south of the roundabout to join with the existing A441 near Bordseley. At this time, what was previously a spur of the A441 became the mainline, while the former route to the west became the B4120.

Hopwood Park services were added to the junction in 1999, with traffic signals added to the motorway slip roads at about the same time.
