Route outline (key)
777 Falkland - Tay Road Bridge

NCN777 serves as an alternative, more rural route to NCN1, which runs along the north coast of Fife instead of loosely following the Eden Valley out to St Andrews. NCN777 starts in the middle of the small but historic village of Falkland and after a brief run along the A912, it follows the B936 north through Auchtermuchty and then climbs up over the eastern end of the Ochil Hills. Just after the B936's summit, the cycle route turns left onto a minor road and curves around the western side of Ormiston Hill to drop quite steeply into Newburgh on the Tay coast. After running along the villages wide main street, the A913, the route forks left onto another minor road, which passes the ruins of Newburgh Abbey and briefly follows the Fife Coast Path. It then climbs up and down across the northern flank of the hills, offering some fine views across the Tay. Eventually, a short sharp climb lifts it past the 100m contour and turns it inland to a crossroads at Hazelton Walls. Here the route turns left and again briefly joins the Fife Coast Path as it loses the coastal view for a time.

After flirting with the 150m contour as it winds behind patches of woodland, the route begins to descend, turning left at a junction to drop down to Balmerino and its ruined Abbey. Another inland run leads through to the B946 above Wormit, where the cycle route turns left and follows the B946 down into the village. They are soon joined by the Coast Path again and the three routes wind eastwards through Wormit and Newport on Tay for the next three miles. After passing under the Tay Road Bridge, the NCN777 again meets the NCN1 which comes in from Tayport and turns up the B946 spur to cross the bridge to Dundee.
