NCN766 is effectively an extension of NCN76, although that route is probably intended to continue further east along the Forth coast in the future. The route therefore starts on the Esplanade at the north end of Kirkcaldy's town centre and follows Dunniker Road inland to the B925, Victoria Road. Here it turns right and continues along Nairn Street before turning left onto Factory Road. The route then meanders northwards through Gallatown on a mixture of suburban streets and off road paths to cross the B981 and pass through an industrial estate. The A92 is crossed on a footbridge, beyond which the route turns right onto Moorhead Road to reach the B9130. This is then followed north through Thornton to the junction with the B921 on the edge of Glenrothes. After a brief run eastwards to the Bankhead Roundabout, the route heads north along Woodside Way, passing through another industrial area and so into the suburbs of Markinch.
After a short meander through a housing estate, which is tricky to follow, the route picks up an old railway line, and crosses the Balbirnie Viaduct, before curving round the old John Haig Factory, now sadly partly derelict. At Markinch Station the cycle route jumps back onto the B9130 along Markinch High Street, before turning right to reach Stobcross Road. After leaving the town behind, it turns right again, winding out through the quiet countryside to the village of Star. It then turns north and climbs gently up to meet NCN1 at the corner of Milldeans Wood.
