A route confirmation sign (often abbreviated to RCS) is normally seen after a major junction to confirm to road-users that they are on the right route. As well as indicating the route number, most such signs also list, and give distances to, the main destinations reachable by that route.

Destinations reachable via a further, differently numbered route may also be indicated; formerly – before the introduction of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1994 – such destinations were indicated between parentheses (see photographs).

Similar signs – called route confirmatory signs – are prescribed in the Republic of Ireland's Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations.
