This ferry operates a service from Kirkwall on the Orkney mainland to the Loth ferry terminal on the isle of Sanday, one of the Northern isles of Orkney. Depending on the time of year, sailings may go via the islands of Eday or Stronsay - the latter typically during the refit period in the winter, when there are only two ferries operating. The direct trip takes around one and a half hours; via Eday around two hours; and via both Eday and Stronsay around three hours.
Orkney Ferries operates three vessels on this route normally: the MV Earl Thorfinn, MV Earl Sigurd, and the MV Varagen. These ferries are also used for sailings to the other North Isles: Eday, Stronsay, Westray and North Ronaldsay.
