The unlikely number A4801 appears between Piccadilly Circus and Charing Cross Road in the centre of London on 1:2500 OS sheets from the 1950s and 60s. Never explicitly numbered on smaller scale maps, it is an obvious conclusion that the number is a misprint for A4201, which continues the route to the west of Picadilly. However, the fact that the number is printed time and again suggests it could actually be genuine.
The route itself was along Coventry Street to Leicester Square and then Cranbourne Street to the Charing Cross Road. Originally part of the B402, which continued to the east, the western end is now part of the city bound A4 one way system.
