Dead Maids is a junction on the A36 in Wiltshire. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, the legend is that a farmer's daughter had two suitors who didn't know about each other and subsequently fought over the girl's affections. One killed the other, whose black dog then savaged the second suitor to death. The daughter, grief-stricken, committed suicide at what was then just a junction of local tracks. Even today the nearby woods are shown as Black Dog Woods on Ordnance Survey maps, and locals in Dilton Marsh referred to the road crossing as Dead Maid's Cross, which Wiltshire County Council then adopted.
