Ower Roundabout opened in 1972. It was built as part of the M27 project, as one of its link roads joined here.
Prior to the large roundabout being constructed, the A31 and A36 used to meet at a large triangle-shaped interchange. In the north-west corner was Romsey Lodge, on what's now Old Salisbury Road. In the north-east corner was Blackwater Bridge and in the southern corner, where the two routes multiplexed, was the New Forest Inn and Ower Bridge.
Blackwater Bridge was replaced with a new dual carriageway as part of the motorway project. Ower Bridge remains untouched.
