A mostly Victorian town built against the South Western Mainline and later sandwiched in by the M3.
The majority of the town became contained within a network of grid streets, bounded by the A335 Southampton Road, B3037 Leigh Road, Chestnut Avenue and Passfield Road.
To the west, the A33 (effectively a faster alternative to the A335) formed the main route from Southampton to Winchester and on to London, and was bypassed, bringing it closer to and forming a new boundary for the town.
The arrival of the motorway network introduced several new accesses in to the town. One at Allbrook saw the creation of Allbrook Way and the curtailing of the A335, another on Leigh Road saw the A335 split to meet both junctions. The third, on the M27, saw Stoneham Lane upgraded and given a spur to reach the motorway. The same happened to Wide Lane, where the new junction took the pressure off the bend where the road crossed the newer railway line.
A third approach, Stoneham Way, took the A335 out of Swaythling and on to a new dual carriageway. The new road met the old at the A27 junction, and the traffic signals there now mean it is impossible to travel the full length of that road. A plan to grade separate that junction, and build a new road broadly following nearby Wessex Lane, were quickly dropped.
