E05

The E05 forms the western-most major route in Europe. In Britain it links West Scotland with the North West, West Midlands and the South Coast.
Route
The official route of the E05 within the United Kingdom is Greenock - Glasgow - Gretna - Carlisle - Penrith - Preston - Warrington - Birmingham - Newbury - Southampton. It uses the A8, M8, M73, M74, A74(M), M6, M42, M40, A34, M3, M27 and M271 on this course.
Scotland
Greenock-Gretna
see main articles A8, M8, M74 and A74(M) The E05 heads east from Greenock along the A8, which soon becomes M8. Upon reaching the edge of Glasgow city centre, it takes the M74 south, which changes number to A74(M) at Abington Interchange and continues all the way to just south of the border.
England
Gretna-Umberslade
see main articles M6, M6 Toll and M42 Between Gretna and the West Midlands, the E05 takes the M6. On reaching the West Midlands, it takes the M6 Toll around the agglomeration, before heading past the airport on the M42 to Umberslade.
Umberslade-Winchester
At Umberslade Interchange, we head south on the M40, passing Warwick, Leamington Spa and Banbury. At Wendlebury Interchange, we TOTSO, taking the A34 south past Oxford (on its ring road), meeting the E30/M4 at Chieveley Interchange. We pass Newbury on its controversial bypass and skirt Winchester on its bypass, meeting the M3 at Winnall Interchange
Winchester-Southampton

At Winnall Interchange near Winchester, we join the M3 heading southwards, passing through the controversial Twyford Down cutting as we pass the city.
At the end of the M3, Chilworth Interchange, we TOTSO and take the M27 West to skirt around Southampton. At the next junction, Rownhams Interchange, we TOTSO again, taking the M271 to the Redbridge Roundabout, outside Southampton Docks, where we the A33 and A35.
There used to be a ferry from Southampton to Le Havre - this now goes from Portsmouth, but the E05 doesn't change route.
Outside the British Isles
The official route of the E05 outside the United Kingdom is Le Havre - Paris - Orléans - Tours - Poitiers - Bordeaux - San Sebastián - Burgos - Madrid - Cordóba - Sevilla - Cádiz - Algeciras.
France
From Le Havre, the E05 takes the A131 and A13 to Paris, the Periferique around Paris, the A6B and A10, passing Orleans, Tours and Poitiers en-route to Bordeaux, the A630 around Bordeaux and the A63 and N10 to the border with Spain.
