Milton Keynes is a city in central England. It is unique in a road sense in that it is the only settlement in the country to possess a numbering system of its own that is actually signposted.
History
What is now currently Milton Keynes has been built up in the area roughly between what was the A5, B557, A50 and A422. Construction of the New Town began around 1968, with an initial phase planned to be complete by the late 1970s, though work around what is now Central Milton Keynes carried on well into the 1980s.
Most of the original roads in the area are still accessible and driveable, albeit not necessarily from end to end. The notable exceptions are the former B488, now partly unclassified and partly replaced by Willen Lake, and the local road from Loughton to Bradwell via Bradwell Common, which has been obliterated by putting Central Milton Keynes on top of it.
As part of the platinum jubilee celebrations in 2022, Milton Keynes was fully awarded with city status.
The grid system of major roads consists of H (for Horizontal) and V (for Vertical) roads, with numbers increasing as you head south east. Roundabouts all have names.
