There are very few transporter bridges in the world, and the one at Middlesborough was one of the few that remain in operation (although as of August 2019 it has been closed). It was built to carry traffic across the River Tees in the port area in Middlesborough, whilst still allowing tall ships underneath. The bridge is colloquially known as the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, although it is actually named the Tees Transporter Bridge.
The engineer was Sir William Arrol. The Gondola can carry 9 cars at a time, and is suspended from the near 160' (48.7m) high gantry by trolley wires. After nearly a century of operation, this bridge is still an important link in the local road network, taking just a couple of minutes to cross the River.
TV Fame
This bridge appeared in Auf Wiedersehen Pet where in the show, it was taken down and moved to Arizona. It also featured in the film Billy Elliot.
