The Sandbanks Ferry is a chain ferry that crosses the mouth of Poole Harbour. The Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company came into being in July 1923 when an Act of Parliament received Royal Assent and giving the necessary powers for this statutory company to be created. The service did not start however, until July 15th 1926. The current boat; the "Bramble Bush Bay" is the fourth to have been used on the route and normally holds up to 48 cars, although 52 can be accommodated. The ferry operates every day including Christmas Day and saves a 25 miles trip around Poole Harbour.
