The Cowes Chain Ferry is chain ferry / floating bridge that crosses the Medina between (West) Cowes and East Cowes. Given the shipping traffic, and the proximity of development on either side, a permanent crossing would be practically impossible to build. The bridge operates about 18 hours a day and continuously crosses back and forth, with a journey time of 2 or 3 minutes (depending on the tide). As the next crossing down is at Newport, the ferry is rather popular, saving a long detour, particularly since most ferries only dock at the smaller East Cowes (only a foot / cycle catamaran service docks at Cowes proper).
