The B6601 was created with the downgrading of the Carnforth Link from motorway to B-road status, to facilitate the provision of development along the route. Upon opening, the road comprised the Carnforth Link and the circulatory carriageway of the roundabout, thus separating what was the remaining stump of the A601(M) (now the A6070) from the M6.
The road now has a T-junction half-way along, serving the new business area. Despite this, horse-drawn vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians are still banned. This means the B6601 is both the first British B-road in history to have such restrictions and to have once been a motorway.
Initially thought to be a spur of the B6254, signposts erected in 2021 revealed that the road had been allocated the number B6601.
