Banbridge in County Down is the home of The Cut (1834) – said to be the world's oldest purpose-built grade-separated junction. The town is named after the crossing point of the River Bann.
The A1 bypass was constructed in 1979 as a single carriageway, with space left for a dual carriageway upgrade that eventually was constructed in 1988.
