Cooper Bridge Roundabout is a signal-controlled junction of the A62 and the A644 just outside Huddersfield. Along with Ainley Top, it is the one of the principal access points linking Huddersfield with the M62.
The A62 is the north-south route between Huddersfield and Leeds via Liversedge, Birstall and M62 junction 27. It multiplexes with the major east-west route, the A644 between Dewsbury and Denholme Clough via Brighouse; between this roundabout and the Three Nuns junction, the A644 is signposted as the dominant route, as the A62 to the north is non-primary.
The junction is notorious for its chronic congestion, as long-distance traffic entering Huddersfield from M62 junction 25 and all points east has to make a sharp right turn at the roundabout. The result is that traffic tails back along the A644 to the west, and for several hours either side of peak times, this queue spills over onto the exit slip from the motorway. In severe cases, it has been known to bring lane 1 of the motorway to a standstill as far back as Hartshead Moor services.
As of spring 2018, there are plans to bypass the roundabout by means of an entirely new road, which is intended to remove through traffic between Huddersfield and the motorway. Huddersfield Daily Examiner article here
