Huddersfield is a large market town in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Its non-trunk road network is maintained by Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council.

The town is notable for the grand-scale ring road around the town centre. Constructed in a number of stages, it features grade separation and sprawling at-grade junctions all in one. The A62 apparently follows the whole circuit meaning that there can be some confusion when following that route.

History

Longroyd Freeway and Leeds Road Freeway

These were a southern and eastern bypass for the town. They were included in the 1969 Traffic and Transport Plan for Huddersfield with a planned completion by 1980. They were also included in The Principal Roads Forward Programme in Roads in England 1973-74.

Longroyd Freeway - Longroyd Bridge on A62 Manchester Road to St. Andrews Road.

Leeds Road Freeway - St. Andrews Road to north of Colne Bridge on B6118 Colne Bridge Road (to join the proposed Mirfield Bypass).

Longroyd Freeway was reported as scrapped by the West Yorkshire Traffic and Transportation sub-committee in October 1976 (it had been postponed in March 1975). Costs had increased from £3.75 million in 1969 to £11 million and there had been a cut in grants for new roads. Leeds Road Freeway lingered on for a bit longer but seems to have been abandoned by 1978.

The planned roads were shown on the 1973 OS Quarter inch map
