Although originally developed in the 1950s to link Sheffield City Centre to the M1 at Barlborough (J30), the route evolved into a vital link for the Mosborough Townships in the 1970s. The route followed roughly the line of the presently named Mosborough Parkway, Eckington Way, Rotherham Road, then south towards Renishaw.
History
Intended as a modern expressway link from Sheffield through the new housing of the south east of Sheffield, through to meet the M1 at Junction 30, the expressway plans reduced after a change of route for the M1 that extended the then new motorway to Leeds, via a route between Rotherham and Sheffield, which negated the need for a long high quality route from M1 Junction 30 and led to the Sheffield Parkway being extended east to meet the M1 at Junction 33.
Part of the route was later built as a much lower quality upgrade to the B6053 and become Eckington Way. Further north another planned section was constructed as a high quality link bypassing Handsworth and Woodhouse and become part of the A57 Mosborough Parkway.
