The R176 is a relatively short road in County Louth linking Carlingford with the R175 near Greenore. It is a good quality S2 with hard shoulders on much of its length. Largely laid on the trackbed of the former Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway, it was upgraded to this high standard in the 1970s, in part because it carries significant HGV traffic to Greenore port, and also to serve as a bypass of the narrow streets in Carlingford town centre. The R176 is signed as forming (together with the R175 from Greenore) part of the main through route from Carlingford Lough to Dundalk in preference to the shorter but much lower-standard middle section of the R173.
