The R162 is a long regional road running north from Navan in County Meath to Monaghan Town by way of Kingscourt at the eastern tip of County Cavan.
Kingscourt has a gypsum mine and related industries, generating significant HGV traffic on this route, especially the southern section between there and Navan. This part of the R162 parallels a railway line that previously carried much of the gypsum traffic but has been disused since 2001.
