Scunthorpe is a town and major steel processing centre in northern Lincolnshire. It is the administrative centre of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority.

History

Kingsway and Queensway (A18)

Opened and named on 26 October 1933 by Prince George. Cost was £120,000. A 3rd and final section of the 3 mile road opened on 28 August 1934 but it is unclear as to which part this related to. The A18 had previously followed the route of B1450.

M180 / M181 Southern Bypass

The 8.7 mile M180 section from J3 Midmoor Interchange to a Temporary Terminus at Castlethorpe (east of J4 Broughton Interchange) and the 2.6 mile M181 Brumby Common Link from M180 Midmoor Interchange to Frodingham Grange, Scunthorpe were opened on 15 December 1978 by William Rodgers, Transport Secretary. Cost was £6 million. Note that there were two Gazette notices, one with the 15 December 1978 date and a later one, for some reason, with an opening date of 30 March 1979. The M181 motorway was truncated by 0.8 mile to Brumby Common Lane Junction in 2021.

Scunthorpe Northwest Orbital Road (A1077)

Stage 1: Frodingham Grange to Ferry Road West

Work started in September 1980 and was expected to finish in June 1981. It was a 24 foot S2 on an embankment just over 4 feet high. Contractor was Clugsons, forecast cost £830,000. It may have opened a spur of B1216.

Stage 2a: Ferry Road West to Luneburg Way

The 0.4 mile road was opened on 31 January 1985 by Vic Chapman, Chairman of Humberside County Council. It was a 7.3m S2. Contractor was the County Council's direct labour organisation, cost £500,000. It may have opened as an unclassified road.

Stage 2b: Luneburg Way to Normanby Road (B1430)

Opened on 26 January 1988 by Bill Watkins, Chairman of Humberside County Council. Contractor was the County Council's direct labour organisation, cost £1.2 million.

Stage 3: Normanby Road (B1430) to Winterton Road

It is shown on the 1991 Philips Road Atlas, but is not on the 1990 OS Road Atlas. This indicates an opening date of around 1990. This final section completed the 3.7 mile road from the then M181.
