Shiney Row Roundabout is a large roundabout in Shiney Row, near Sunderland. It connects the A183 between Sunderland and Chester-le-Street with the A182 dual carriageway through Washington New Town and, when built, was the first at-grade junction on the A182 from its beginning at Havannah Interchange on the A194(M).
The roundabout was opened in December 1975, its construction having required the demolition of two churches, two pubs and several streets of houses, as well as the village's war memorial being re-sited. Pedestrian access was provided between Shiney Row and the neighbouring village of Penshaw by way of a subway through the middle of the roundabout.
The large flared carriageways on the north-western side of the roundabout strongly suggest that it was built with future grade-separation in mind; however, every other exit is heavily built-up and so a continuation of the dual carriageway would have required substantial demolition. In the 2000s, more modest plans to bypass the A182 south of the junction involved the construction of a new route, known as the Central Route, which would have run through the former Lambton Cokeworks site to eventually reach the B1284 near Rainton Bridge. Only the most northerly portion was ever built, starting from a roundabout just to the west of Shiney Row and running southwards to meet the A183. The A183 was subsequently moved onto this road, creating a multiplex with the A182 between the two roundabouts; had the Central Route been completed it would have removed the A182 from Shiney Row Roundabout entirely.
