Chester Road Interchange is a junction on the A19 Sunderland bypass where it is crossed by the A183, giving access to residential areas of western Sunderland and to Chester-le-Street as well as the villages of Penshaw and Shiney Row.
It is a standard roundabout interchange, controlled by traffic lights.
History
The junction was part of the Sunderland Bypass. It opened initially with the southern section from A690 Herrington Interchange on 8 May 1972. The section northwards over Hylton Viaduct did not open until 30 September 1974.
