Sunderland is a city in North East England, located at the mouth of the River Wear in the historic county of County Durham. After originating as three separate settlements - namely Sunderland, Monkwearmouth and Bishopwearmouth - Sunderland grew significantly during the industrial revolution, becoming a major hub for shipbuilding and glassmaking. It was awarded city status in 1992 and remains an important regional centre, despite the departure of much of its industry.
As a major city by the sea, Sunderland is served by a number of radial routes including the A19 which bypasses it to the west. The city is bisected by the River Wear, but unlike nearby Newcastle upon Tyne it has very few bridges - only two between the A19 and the sea. In early 2018 this will increase to three with the opening of the Northern Spire which will carry the A1231.
