Downhill Lane Interchange is a junction on the A19 at the northwestern edge of the city of Sunderland. It provides access to the Nissan offices via the A1290, as well as north-western areas of Sunderland and a shortcut to East and West Boldon via Downhill Lane.

History

The junction after opening in 1972

The junction opened as part of the Hylton Grange Interchange to Testos Roundabout section of the Sunderland Bypass on 20 March 1972. It initially had just south facing slip roads.

A scheme to convert both this junction from a diamond to a roundabout interchange, and the adjacent Testos Roundabout also to a grade-separated roundabout interchanges (with braided slip-roads) was constructed between 2019 and 2022, with Downhill Lane improvements opening to traffic in March 2022.
