Stump Cross is the junction east of Halifax where the main route east of the town splits, one part towards Leeds and the M62, and the other towards Bradford. In the opposite direction, traffic from Bradford and Halifax-bound traffic from the westbound M62 converges with no commensurate increase in road capacity, and has to negotiate the long, deep, early 19th century Godley cutting to get into Halifax. The junction is therefore a notorious bottleneck in the westbound direction.
