For the concurrent junction 1, renumbered junction 3, see Staithgate Roundabout.
Chain Bar is junction 26 of the M62 and junction 1 of the M606. It was originally a crossroads between the A58 and A638, with both motorways opening in 1973.
The main junction is a multi-lane signalised roundabout located beneath both the M62 and M606, providing connections to both motorways and the A58 and A638. The M606 itself has direct sliproads to and from Manchester as a means of improving access to the Pennine section of the M62. The westbound flyover is subject to a 50 mph speed restriction which is enforced by speed cameras.
In 2007-8, a 2+ HOV lane was installed on the southbound M606 to allow car sharers to bypass the roundabout and access the M62 towards Leeds. Plans exist to implement an underpass to enable traffic from Leeds to access the M606 directly, but it is unknown if this too will be subject to 2+ restrictions. Similar proposals were made in the 1990s but without the HOV lane.
In 2015 work commenced on adding an extra lane to the roundabout. This was completed in 2017.
