Ballasalla is a growing village which lies just north of the Isle of Man Airport, and on the main road from the airport to Douglas, the island capital. For this reason, a bypass is being constructed in 2023, albeit one which will also act as a distributor route for a new housing development. Although the village does have a core of old buildings with a handful of shops and services, the village seems to be more a commuter village serving the airport and large industrial estate, with nearby Castletown or even Douglas being the primary destination for residents.
The main road through the village is the A5, which starts in Douglas and continues past the airport to Castletown before heading west along the coast to Port Erin. However, before 1987 the A5 wiggled through Ballasalla and took the inland route to Port Erin, now the route of the A7, since they swapped routes. It is the A5 towards Douglas that is being bypassed, with the roundabouts both complete in spring 2023, but a house still stood in the way of the bypass at the southern end, where the roundabout also provides access to the industrial estate along the B53.
The A7 currently meets the A5 at a roundabout in the centre of the village, and then heads north to a second roundabout before heading west. At this junction, the A26 heads north to ultimately reach the A1, with the short and quiet A34 forking off soon after. Both the A34 and A7 meet the A3, which passes to the west of the village and is the main spine route across the southern part of the island. This route is far busier than the other routes through Ballasalla, with the exception of the A5.
