The C40 is a confusing route to identify. According to the council list it starts on the B771 in Barrhead and follows Graham Street west. However, this then becomes Gateside Road which is listed separately as the C44. Beyond Gateside, Gateside Road turns left to pass under the railway, with Fereneze Road continuing ahead, and this is listed as part of the C40. This climbs a little to run along the hillside above the A736 as far as the C39, Shilford Road above Shilford. From end to end, this route is just a little longer than the stated length of nearly 3.5 miles in the council list, however about a third of the route appears to be the C44, so it is not entirely clear where exactly the C40 runs.
