The C503 is formed of two parts, London Road and New Road. They are linked by Above Bar Street, which is classified lower than a C road.
London Road
London Road is a busy shopping street and throughfare in Southampton, forming the main route north of the city centre for non-motorised traffic and buses. In 2008 it was rebuilt so as to benefit those users, creating a less hostile environment for vulnerable road users. It was part of the A33 but was bypassed in the 60s.
New Road
Originally part of the A3024, New Road was bypassed with the ring road skirting the edges of the parks in the City Centre. New Road forms a barrier between Palmerston Park and East Park and meets the C506 East Park Terrace on the eastern edge of them.
