The C506 forms a U-shaped route in Central Southampton. Beginning at the Civic Centre it heads down Portland Terrace, under the West Quay shopping centre, through the city walls at Arundel Tower and along Castle Way and West Street to the High Street.
Heading along the High Street, a spur continues to the A33 at Town Quay, while the C506 turns right into Briton Street, the eastern end of which forms another spur to the A33. Turning left into Queensway, the road heads due north to Charlotte Place.
