The Townhill Link Motorway is unbuilt motorway link from M27 junction 6 (also unbuilt) into Southampton, through the new development of Townhill, ending at Mousehole Roundabout north of Bitterne. It unofficially gained the number M273. Just south of the M27, there would have also been a junction with the A27.
This motorway would have been very bizarre, not linking with anything much of significance in Southampton, nor distributing traffic around the new development at Townhill Park (initially the road was to be constructed as a road performing this function and then upgraded). A lot of the justification for this road came from a new town that was to be built outside the M27.
Needless to say, when the new town plan went, the motorway plan, which was very shaky already (given it didn't really do much), was consigned to the scrap heap. While not on the motorway's line all the time, Townhill Way was built performing the distributory function through the development; when it is on the line of the motorway, despite the motorway being cancelled before the development got underway, space has been left for dualling.
