Cloghran Interchange is junction 2 of the M1. It is not to be confused with Cloghran Roundabout, which is on the R132.
When the motorway was first planned in the 1960s, the interchange was repeatedly shown as a Trumpet Interchange. When it finally opened in 1985, it was designed as the temporary terminus for the M1, which approached from the south, and narrowed before taking a sharp bend. The shape of the land acquisition suggests a fully grade separated junction was still intended at this time.
When the M1 was finally extended in 2003, it was decided to build it as a simpler roundabout interchange. The former northbound carriageway was retained as a free-flow left turn.
