Crofthead Interchange is a grade separated roundabout interchange on the A71 to the south of Livingston's town centre. The roundabout lies below the main road and provides access to the suburbs to the north and south of the A71. It is clear that the junction was built in anticipation of the A71 being dualled in the future, although to date this has not happened. The current single carriageway bridges lie off centre towards the northern side of the roundabout, and the formation of the unbuilt westbound carriageway can be seen alongside as a broad grassy swathe through the woodland that has grown up around the junction. Equally, the westbound sliproads are slightly longer than their counterparts, as they have to cross the unbuilt carriageway before merging onto the A71.
|
| As the New Town of Livingston developed, so did its road network, and the previously sinuous A71 was straightened in the early 1970s in preparation for development. The 1974 OS One Inch map shows the new road for the first time, with the junction shown as a flat roundabout where the turnings are dead ends. The bridge appears to have been built a year or two later as the surrounding development progressed. |
