Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk. It is important in road terms as the A12 and A14 meet and multiplex to the south of the town.

In the 1960s a major southwestern expansion of the town was planned and new roads would have complemented the new development in common with other new towns of the time. The A14 bypass, then A45, would have ran closer in to town following the railway line. Copdock Interchange would have been the location of a full cloverleaf serving access roads to the vast new planned urban area. The expansion plans were abandoned soon afterwards and no detailed plans of the proposed roads have ever been found.
