Saffron Walden is a town in north-west Essex. With a population of over 15,000, it is one of the largest settlements not to be served by a Class I route. This was not always the case, however; the town's two A-roads were downgraded when the M11 was opened. Despite the 14-mile gap between junctions 8 and 9, no junction was built to serve the town.
