Welwyn Garden City is an early new town in Hertfordshire. Unlike most towns, which have grown up around a river crossing or around a junction between two major routes, Welwyn Garden City was built on privately owned land close to the Great North Road and alongside the East Coast Main Line. Until 1971 when the main north-south route through the town was reclassifed as A1000, there were no A roads in the town, although the A1 (now B197) Great North Road passes between Welwyn Garden City and the adjoining village of Lemsford.
Connections to Major Routes
Welwyn Garden City is located to the east of the A1(M) and is served by junctions 4, 5 and 6. Junction 4, known as Oldings Corner connects the A6129 and A414 to the A1(M), as well as the A1001 to Hatfield. Junction 5 comprises a single northbound on-slip from the B197 at Lemsford. The A1000 runs from junction 6 into Welwyn Garden City from the north.
