Barnet is a town in Hertfordshire that gives its name to a London Borough Council and Highway Authority. It was the place where the A6 diverged off the A1 Great North Road and was bypassed in 1926 with two roads linking into the Watford Bypass, which was built at the same time, near Mill Hill - the A5092 heading north to Olding's Corner, Hatfield and the A5093 to Highgate. The Barnet Bypass was renumbered as A555 in 1935 and later as A1, which also meant that the A6 was truncated back to Bignells Corner, South Mimms.
