Southwark is an ancient borough (hence its name 'The Borough') on the opposite bank of the Thames from the The City.
It is where the regional government of Greater London has its seat, and the suburb of Newington used to be where the administration of Surrey took place.
This part of Central London has long been an important hub of roads from Surrey, Sussex and Kent, due to the many centuries where London Bridge was the only crossing of the Thames for some distance.
