Boreham Interchange is junction 19 of the A12.
The interchange was created when the most recent Chelmsford bypass was tied in to the Boreham bypass. However, the original proposal differed to what was eventually built. The decision to build a new bypass resulted from the outcome of a public consultation held in 1973 where the strongest support was for a route to the south of the town compared to the other options of upgrading the existing 1930s bypass and a northern bypass. Firm proposals were published in 1974 and draft orders were made. The scheme consisted of two separate junctions - a fork junction where the new and existing bypasses meet and a roundabout interchange for the B1137. An alternative design shows the roundabout interchange replaced with a diamond interchange. The scheme went to public inquiry in 1975 where the inspector recommended that the existing bypass should be upgraded instead. Design work stopped on the southern bypass as the government accepted the outcome of the public inquiry. This was short lived as the plan reverted back to the southern bypass in 1979 and the scheme was drawn from scratch with new junction layouts. This opened in 1986 with the dumbbell layout as we know it.
In 2021 it is planned to modify the junction to improve capacity and create space for the tie-in of the A130/Chelmsford North East Bypass scheme[1]; this will:
- Create a cut-through on the eastern dumbbell roundabout (known as Generals Farm Roundabout) for traffic leaving the A12 southbound to head towards Chelmsford.
- Move the western dumbbell roundabout (known as Generals Lane Roundabout) slightly to the west
- Increase capacities on approaches
