Macclesfield Road Junction is a signalised crossroads opened in 2018 as part of the A555 extension.
It was originally planned as a small roundabout which would have formed the southern end of the A6(M) although the section from here to Simpsons Corner would have been all purpose. This roundabout was the proposed junction from 1973 to 1990. By 1991 the proposals had changed to a dumbbell interchange and there would have been C/D lanes between here and Simpsons Corner. The extra capacity was required for the A555 link road to Manchester Airport and the close spacing of the two junctions.
The A6(M) proposals were abandoned by the end of the century and replaced with a smaller scale scheme under the title of SEMMMS. The 2006 scheme consisted of a roundabout interchange with the A555 passing below. This proposal was further watered down to the signalised junction that was eventually built.
