This junction uses up three junction numbers. It is junction 3 and junction 4 of the M60 and junction 1 of the M56, of which it is the eastern terminus. The M60 here was known as M63 until 1998 and this was junction 10.
The junction was opened in two stages in 1974. The contract known as Sharston Bypass East, comprising the M63 (later M60) east to M60 J2 and the M56 west to M56 J2, was opened on 26 March. The Sale Eastern and Northenden Bypass, comprising the M63 (later M60) north-west to M60 J7, followed on 3 Oct.
Early proposals from 1965 show a different layout with the main A34 junction being a three level stacked roundabout and junction 2 moving closer to junction 3. Ironically this would have removed all weaving from the M60 mainline which currently plagues this junction.
