Wythenshawe Junction is junction 4 of the M56. It has always had north-facing slip roads only. When the M56 was first opened in January 1972 it was a rare example of a grade-separated roundabout with slip roads in one direction only. When the M56 underneath was widened to D4M in the early 1990s, the two original bridges were demolished and replaced by one new bridge, converting the junction to a signal-controlled half-diamond.
