Simpson's Corner is a junction on the A6 just south of Hazel Grove, near Stockport.
History
Oxhey Interchange
This is the earliest known proposal which dates from the 1960s to 1972. It was a five way limited access freeflow junction connecting the A6(M), M68, Disley and High Lane Bypass and a realignment of the A523 towards Macclesfield. There are also connections to the existing A6, one of these is to provide an escape route for prohibited traffic from the Disley and High Lane Bypass as this is all purpose whereas the others are motorways.
Buxton Road Interchange
The next proposal is for the A6(M) scheme from 1973 to 1998. This was for a roundabout interchange. By 1991 a collector/distributor system had been added to cater for weaving traffic between this junction and Macclesfield Road Junction. This junction was also Stockport MBC's preferred location for the connection to the Disley and High Lane Bypass.
Simpsons Corner
Following the withdrawal of the A6(M) a smaller scale scheme under the name of SEMMMS was promoted by the local authorities. The junction was initially planned as a roundabout but this was changed to a signal controlled crossroads. At the moment only three arms of the junction are built. The A6 diversion and the junction itself opened at 6am on Wednesday 19th April 2017, however access to the A555 was coned off pending completion of the route, which happened on Sunday 14th of October 2018. The remaining section from here to Bredbury is still in development and funding has yet to be secured.
