Swansea City and County Council is the Highway Authority responsible for all public roads in the Swansea principal area, other than the M4 motorway, which is managed by the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) on behalf of the Welsh Government.

As well as roads and associated footpaths the council maintains 250 bridges, other road-related structures, traffic signals, road markings, non-illuminated traffic signs, 5,000 illuminated traffic signs, and 30,000 street lights in its area.
