The A651 along with its close relatives the A652 and A654 must surely rank among the most pointless ‘A’ roads in the UK. While all around, former ‘A’ roads keep being downgraded for no reason whatsoever, these three sorry excuses for ‘A’ status somehow manage to retain it. They're prime candidates for becoming lowly ‘B’ roads if you ask me. Anyway, rant over; at least it fills out the description a bit because there is not a lot to describe, as you will see.
Route: Tong - Heckmondwike
The road begins at a set of traffic lights on the A650 between Tong Street and Drighlington and forks to the right, going gently downhill on a 30 mph S2. After a mile and a bit we encounter the A58 at Birkenshaw Roundabout. We then cross over the M62 without a junction and continue by climbing uphill, passing through the village of Gomersal. We then begin to drop downhill and then come to an end where we meet the A62 just outside Heckmondwike. The B6117 continues ahead into the town centre.
